The Mini Guide To Chin Filler

By Florence Goulbourne

Chin filler, more formally known as chin augmentation, is a popular dermal filler treatment intended to help define and strengthen the chin and jawline. A well-defined and harmonious side-profile is considered desirable for many patients, especially when the signs of ageing become  more apparent. Perfect for both male and female patients, chin filler can help to combat an array of concerns besides a unangular side profile.

In this blog, we explore the reason behind the rise of chin filler appointments and how this treatment can help to enhance and shape a patientā€™s face.

Is Chin Filler Worth It?

One question frequently asked by unassuming patients is whether chin filler is essentially ā€˜worth itā€™. What patients often mean by this is, can they achieve the results they are hoping for, simply with a dermal filler treatment. Chin augmentation is a non-surgical treatment that helps to correct a weak chin and helps to restore balance to the face. If the treatment is performed correctly, then absolutely, chin filler is a worthwhile treatment for patients. Intended to restore facial harmony, chin filler is often seen as a successful treatment to help combat a ā€˜recedingā€™ chin. When placed correctly, chin filler can help to elongate the face, creating a slimmer and more youthful-looking appearance whilst also correcting facial asymmetry with instant results.

Plus, with a treatment time of 15-30 minutes* and minimal downtime, this treatment is a quick yet effective treatment for a host of perceived flaws.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

As with many dermal filler treatments, chin fillers arenā€™t suitable for everyone and an in-depth consultation should be had with the patient.  Itā€™s important that practitioners consider their patientsā€™ goals and existing features before suggesting filler as a solution. For example, if a patient already has a strong jawline, adding projection to the chin can give the look of a bottom-heavy jaw. Ideal candidates for chin filler are those concerned with aspects of their jaw and chin such as shape, projection, or lack of, dimpling and fine lines. Patients who have a weak jaw or a receding chin are also ideal for chin filler treatments.  Contrary to some beliefs, augmentation of the chin isnā€™t exclusively for patients who are somewhat unhappy with their chin. Patients may also seek chin filler to help balance asymmetry or to strengthen their side profiles for cosmetic purposes rather than to  correct a perceived flaw.

Adults over the age of 18, both male and female are appropriate for chin fillers.

What Does The Treatment Involve?

During a treatment, a practitioner will clean the area and apply a topical numbing cream, other methods of pain relief may be given if a patient is allergic to lidocaine. The practitioner will then take a dermal filler, typically a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler, and will strategically place it at different points of the chin ā€“ depending on the patients aims. For example, if a patient is seeking to elongate the look of their chin, the practitioner will aim to inject filler on the underside of the chin. The injection points should be precisely chosen by the practitioner to ensure the correct amount of volume is restored to the area. When injected, the filler will lift and volumise and rejuvenate the injected area to accomplish the patientā€™s aims.  Itā€™s important that patients are aware that chin filler will not get rid of existing fat under the chin but may help to improve the appearance by adding structure. If patients expect fat reduction, practitioners should advise a course of fat dissolving injections under the chin prior to having chin filler.

A chin filler treatment can take anywhere from 15-40 minutes depending on multiple factors such as the practitionerā€™s injection technique and the patientsā€™ goals. With this treatment, thereā€™s little to no downtime and patients can return to their normal activities almost immediately. Although some patients may experience slight swelling or bruising, these side-effects often subside within a few days.

What Is the Best Dermal Filler To Use?

With a plethora of fillers of all formulations available on the market, it can be a difficult decision choosing which filler is the most effective.  As the area requires a thicker substance to fill, for chin augmentation, we would recommend REVOLAX Sub-Q. The thickest and most viscous dermal filler within the REVOLAX range, REVOLAX Sub-Q has the advanced ability to mould and maintain structure in denser areas of the face, such as the chin. The thick formulation of Sub-Q will help to shape and enhance the chin for a sharp side profile with 12-18 months of longevity.

Rebecca Rutherford Browning at @scratchaesthetics says:  ā€œI love using REVOLAX  Sub-Q when performing bone work by where we are mimicking a bone structure to restore volume loss or add fullness. As it is the thickest product in the REVOLAX range, you are still able to mould and shape the product. This product also has fantastic longevity where most of my clients results last up to 18 months.

Alternatively, The Future of Restorative Injectables,Ā aesPllaĀ®ā€Æis quickly becoming a favourite amongst practitioners to help define the chin and jawline. Unlike REVOLAX, aesPllaĀ® is formulated with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and aims to create natural-looking volume, gradually. With aesPllaĀ®, volume can be added to increase the projection of the chin and to make the chin vertically longer ā€“ disguising the jowls by injecting into the pre-jowl sucus. This PLLA collagen stimulator works to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin, aiding in volume restoration over a few months.Ā

Key Takeaways of Chin Filler

Ultimately, chin filler is a beneficial and effective treatment when correctly executed. With instant results that can help refine a patientā€™s appearance, chin fillers are proving to be popular amongst many in suit of a snatched jawline. For practitioners, ensuring that you consider your patients aims when injecting is crucial for an error-free treatment.

Regan Ellis, Aesthetics Practitioner and REVOLAX Ambassador at @_signaturestudiosā€Ægives her top piece of advice for practitioners treating the chin: ā€œI would personally say that less is more and that you can easily obtain amazing results with even 0.4/0.5ml of filler if you bolus and thread correctly. Donā€™t overuse filler, perfect the technique. 1.1ml+ is not usually needed for the chinā€.
