Make-up After Dermal Filler Treatments

Dermal filler treatments are a famously quick, non-surgical aesthetic treatment. Who wouldn’t want to pop into the clinic next door during their lunch break and walk back into the office with plump lips or visibly rejuvenated skin? While the idea of getting fillers before a big event, a date or a work meeting may be tempting, patients undergoing a dermal filler treatment must be aware of one very important rule: no make-up for at least 12 hours after the treatment.

Make-up culture today

A survey of 3000 women revealed that 1/3 of all surveyed participants would not leave the house without make-up. A further study conducted included 2200 women of whom 60% stated that they wear make-up at least once a week. 26% of those state that they wear it at least twice a week and 28% admit to wearing make-up every day of the week.

With these numbers in mind, it is important for practitioners of dermal fillers to advise their clients on the no make-up rule before they conduct the treatment. Most importantly, patients need to be aware that while quick dermal filler appointments are a convenient possibility, a 12 hour waiting period for make-up application is strongly advised, and the appointments should be planned accordingly. Although a patient may feel pressure to hide bruises or redness from the procedure, it is essential to avoid applying  make-up too soon to protect the skin.

Why should you wait to apply make-up after filler treatments?

While practitioners state that complications after a treatment due to make-up application are rare, they also believe that patients and practitioners alike should be mindful about the risks.

Dermatologists suggest risks associated with make-up application post treatment are largely due to the compromised skin barrier. Under regular circumstances, the skin blocks bacteria, viruses, chemicals and fungi from entering the body, however, dermal filler and other aesthetic procedures can temporarily compromise the barrier by penetrating the skin and leaving tiny open wounds.

Applying make-up on top of these wounds can cause a variety of different side effects ranging from infections to allergic reactions. These can be caused by unhygienic make-up applications. It is highly unlikely that the used make-up and make-up applicator are sterile, and this can lead to infection if applied before the skin’s barrier has had time to heal and repair.

What make-up can you use after dermal filler treatment?

If it is unavoidable to apply cosmetic products after the procedure, post-treatment make-up is available on the market. Mineral based powders and products are a good alternative when applied with clean brushes or sponges. Sterile applicators and the right make-up can make all the difference, and using these may decrease the risk of allergic reactions and infections.

It is important that both practitioner and client have an open conversation about the possible risks associated with the use of make-up after the treatment. If make-up is an absolute must, the right products and applicators will make a difference for your appearance and skin health!
